Sculptures that move

These mobile „Animals“ are the vision of Dutch artist Theo Jansen. Jansen has been creating kinetic sculptures that live on beaches since 1990. The walking animals are propelled by wind power. Each animal is made from electrical tubes, that are bound together by zip ties. Inside the structures a rotating spine allows the creatures to move forwards and backwards. The sculptures can even detect and avoid the water. Currently, Jansen’s animals can only be seen on the beaches of the Netherlands.

„Over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements… eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives“. – Theo Jansen, Artist and Sculptor.
